Description
“Holiday Greeting Cards” Instructor Paul Clendenin
Dec.14th 1-day workshop
$25 for guild members
$50 for non-guild members
This is a basic technique class targeted at beginner/intermediate level students. The only requirement is a willingness to enjoy art in a relaxed, no pressure environment. We will have a good time.
My intention for this class is to demonstrate watercolor painting techniques for holiday greeting cards. The first scene will be a winter evening snow-scape, followed by a filigreed Christmas ornament.

MATERIALS
Paints
Pthalo Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Alizarin Crimson
Cadmium Red Light
Burnt Sienna
Raw sienna
Cadmium yellow light

Brushes
As we will be working small, small brushes are in order:
Small brushes, brights from ½ to 1 inch
Small to Medium Rounds
Small Script liner brush about a #1
Watercolor paper. I work with Arches 140# cold press paper in 22”x 30” sheets. (I cut the sheet into 8 equal pieces for class demos and exercises, which yields an eighth sheet size of 7-1/2” x 11” or 1/16th sheet for card size of 5-1/2” x 7-1/2”). Any paper, tablet, or block that you have in small rectangular shapes will be fine. You will need at least four small sheets. I will be demonstrating on Strathmore greeting card stock, cut and pre-folded to 4”x6”. The value of using precut, or cutting to a standard size, allows the ability of purchasing precut mats and frames.
I will be using a gel roller pen with gold ink for filigree work on the ornament.
Other materials to bring:
- A board to mount your paper on (unless you are working from a block or tablet).
- Masking tape for borders
- Salt that you can pour into your hand.
- Two water containers
- A sponge or tissue arrangement for controlling water in the brushes.
- Small spray bottle for spritzing water is sometimes handy
- Tissues
