Painting Fall Leaves

Do you love fall leaves?  During this watercolor workshop we’ll talk about layering strategy and using colors to maximize the vibrancy that can be achieved while painting your fall leaves.  Students will be presented with different painting methods, including using masking fluid, negative painting, and various ways to create texture in a fall leaf painting.  Students should bring fall leaves or their own photos of fall leaves to each session.

This workshop is best suited for students who have previous experience painting in watercolor.

ARTIST BIO Leslie studied art at Pacific Northwest College of Art and received a BFA in Painting.

Her work has included textile design, mosaic, murals and mixed-media. She is currently focusing on painting in watercolor, gouache and acrylics. Teaching has become integral to her artwork, as it compels her to learn more as she practices. With 14 years of teaching experience, Leslie strives to facilitate an environment where students in her classes learn to trust their instincts, and begin to see art as a process and adventure.

SUPPLY LIST These are just suggestions. Bring any watercolor paints and supplies you have.

WATERCOLORS: Bring what you have, but if you want to broaden your colors, here are some suggested watercolor tube paints:

Split Primary Color Palette:

  • Hansa Yellow Light (PY3)
  • Hansa Yellow Medium (PY97)
  • Pyrrol Scarlet (PR255)
  • Quinacridone Magenta (PR122)
  • Ultramarine Blue (PB29)
  • Winsor Blue (Green Shade, PB15)
  • Extra Colors that you could add: Burnt Sienna Burnt Umber and Paynes Grey
  • BRUSHES: Bring what you have, and if you want to broaden your range of brushes, here are some suggestions: 1” Flat wash brush, #12 round, #8 round, #4 round, ½” flat
  • Fall leaves or your own photos of fall leaves
  • Water Soluble Graphite Pencil
  • PAPER: Arches Watercolor Paper (140lb, 100% cotton, 9” x 12” or smaller)
  • Masonite Board (a bit larger than your paper) or any rigid surface
  • Artist masking tape
  • Pencil & eraser
  • Paper Towels
  • 2 Water containers
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Liquid masking fluid and inexpensive liner brush for masking fluid.
  • Optional: sea sponges
