LANDSCAPE SKETCHING with GOUACHE Leslie Barnum
10am – 2pm
Wednesdays, July 16, 23 and 30

$60/Members and $120/Nonmembers

Gouache is an exciting opaque and water-soluble medium used for both color sketches and finished paintings. The bold and vivid color of gouache work well for painting landscapes in the studio or plein air. Students will learn basic gouache techniques and color-mixing during the start of this three-week workshop. Practical tips for sketching your composition and simplifying complex scenes will be demonstrated by creating an initial value study. Students will create small colorful gouache landscape sketches while learning to build their landscape layer by layer: from blocking in the big shapes to adding those crucial details that make your painting pop.

ARTIST BIO Leslie studied art at Pacific Northwest College of Art and received a BFA in Painting. Her work has included textile design, mosaic, murals and mixed-media. She is currently focusing on painting in watercolor, gouache and acrylics. Teaching has become integral to her artwork, as it compels her to learn more as she practices. With 14 years of teaching experience, Leslie strives to facilitate an environment where students in her classes learn to trust their instincts, and begin to see art as a process and adventure.
