SUMI-E PAINTING: MODERN STYLE
Instructor – Nancy Smith Klos
March 3, 10, 17
10am – 2pm
Day 1: Intro to Sumi-e: Bamboo Practice!
Brushwork and mark-making begins our first session, with practice using the ink and Chinese brushes on rice papers. Value, gesture & expression will be explored with Sumi-e ink and some gouache. The study of bamboo offers a unique experience for students. Understanding similarities and differences in brushstrokes helps build a visual vocabulary to design original paintings from. Each student will have a series of practice “writings,” along with some “Written Bamboo paintings” on rice papers to bring home!
Day 2: Modern Sumi-e Practice: Floral Designs
Practicing drawing bamboo helps us to warmup and review. We then move into painting plants and flowers in the Japanese technique for kimono design. Students explore color and design with both gouache and ink and will bring home their practice samples of bamboo and their finished floral paintings on Japanese rice papers. These designs translate beautifully onto silks!
“Chrysanthemums”
Day 3
Modern Sumi-e: Landscape Painting
Sumi-e techniques for the traveler! How do you capture the essence of the places you visit?
You will find the essential lines throughout complex landscape and record them in your sketchbook and learn about mark-making. We will learn color mixing and contour line using Gouache and ink together. Students will create their own original paintings & writings.
